We had Ellen Page, Jennifer Lawrence, Carey Mulligan and now comes Elizabeth Olsen. These are young actresses entered the Hollywood elite during festival season. Juno, Winter’s Bone, An Education and this year’s Martha Marcy May Marlene gave these young ingénues the perfect playing ground to show off their incredible talent and make heads turn and jaws drop. Martha Marcy May Marlene premiered last year at the Sundance Film Festival and the buzz it created has not yet subsided, not by a long shot.
The Screen Actor’s Guild Award and the Golden Globe nominations were announced this week but Olsen was not included. Nevertheless, her performance speaks for itself and if you have seen the film, it speaks volumes. Nomination or not, this kid claimed her spot in the Hollywood elite.
Subtle and powerful, Olsen is mesmerizing. She captures the audience as soon as she pops on screen and doesn’t let it go until the final credits are rolling down. Yes, Olsen’s name is familiar and yes she is related to the media moguls Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen and this little sister is proof that blood runs thick. Blood, however, can get you so far. Instead of rushing into Hollywood and becoming a pure product of nepotism Elizabeth decided to arm herself with an acting degree before heading to the front. This move shows the dedication she has to her craft and her performance reaps all its benefits.
The beauty of these discoveries is that they are new and therefore just beginning. Olsen is just getting started and like the ones before her, there is no doubt that the best is yet to come!
